Wine of the week: A leap of faith

As winter closes in, the temptation is to try and find bigger, bolder reds for comfort. It’s a little bit of a surprise then, just as the days are getting shorter and the evenings colder, that my wine of the week is the elegant, refined 2015 Frog’s Leap Zinfandel from Napa Valley, USA.

What makes this outstanding compared to all the red wine power that’s available, such as Australian Shiraz or Italian Primitivo, is the round, silky tannins which complement the intense fruit flavours.

On top of this, at 13.5% ABV, it delivers less alcohol and less body than your average Zinfandel, or indeed, your average big red wine. However, it certainly doesn’t lack any punch as a result.

Bright berry flavours including ripe cherry and sweet plum combine with fresh acidity and some spice aromas to give a very well-balanced and restrained red. The only problem is that it doesn’t last very long as it tastes so good!

You can buy 2015 Frog’s Leap Zinfandel from Waitrose at around £25 a bottle.
